Mary Lu Shelton, 75

DOVER - Mary Lu Shelton of Dover departed this life Monday, April 16, 2007, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 75.

Mary Lu was born Jan. 15, 1932, to the late Pauline Cottrell and Deacon Nelson Simmons Sr. in Aliquippa, Pa.

She received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Cheyney (Pa.) University. She also attended Ohio State University and Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Mary Lu worked for the Franklin County Welfare Department in Columbus, Ohio, for four years as a social worker. She also worked as a teacher in the Columbus Public School System for three years. She moved to Hightstown, N.J., in 1970 and was employed for 25 years by the East Windsor Regional School District as a teacher retiring in 1995.

She moved to Dover in 1995 where she united with the Calvary Baptist Church. She was a member of the Pastor's Aide and Sanctuary Choir. She also participated in summer school activities and Black History Month.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Nelson Simmons Jr. and Fred Simmons.

Mary Lu is survived by one daughter, Michele Shelton-Kelley of Dover; two sons and one daughter-in-law; Reginald Shelton and Dana and his wife, Kelly Shelton, both of Dover; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Earl and Marilyn Simmons of Spring Hill, Fla.; a brother and sister-in-law, Melvin and Sheila Simmons of Washington; one sister, Bernice Peters of Englishtown, N.J.; two sisters-in-law, Carlene Simmons of Washington and Grace Simmons of Aliquippa, Pa.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Viewing will be today from 5-7 p.m. in Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Calvary Baptist, Del. 8, where friends may view two hours prior.

Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Dover.
