Mary Elizabeth Walpole

Walpole (nee) Toulan, 78 DOVER - Mary Elizabeth Walpole (nee) Toulan, 78, of Dover, formerly of Bel Air, Md., died June 1, 2011. Born in Baltimore, Md., in 1932 she was the daughter of the late Theodore P. and Maria P. Toulan. Mary Elizabeth had grown up in Baltimore, Md., and was an alumnis of the Institute of Notre Dame in Baltimore. She had worked as clerical personnel for the B&O Railroad prior to marrying her best friend "Jerry" and raising six children. They lived between Dover and Baltimore throughout their lives together. Mary Elizabeth was an active member of the Holy Cross Church Community and was as a Eucharistic Minister serving area Nursing Homes and Rehabilitation Centers. After the closing of Holy Cross High School, Mary along with a group of devoted men and women worked tirelessly and founded St. Thomas Moore Academy in Magnolia, DE, a private Catholic High School opening 10 years after their vision began. The Academy has evolved into Saint Thomas Moore Preparatory School and is operated by the Diocese of Wilmington. Mary Elizabeth along with others helped establish the International Food Festival held each year at Holy Cross. At the age of 65 she became involved in the Lewes Polar Bear Plunge raising money for the Delaware Special Olympics. In her quieter moments she enjoyed the time spent with her family and friends. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Mark G."Jerry" Walpole, in 1987. She was the loving mother to Mary T. Garfinkel and husband William, Mark G. Walpole, Jr., Thomas P. Walpole and wife Cynthia, Mary Patricia Staron and husband Gordon, Keith J. Walpole and wife Pamela and Sean M. Walpole and wife Kathleen. She was sister to Donald T. Toulan, Patricia T. Tewey and the late Dr. Theodore F. Toulan and Sheila Toulan. She was Mary "Mimi" and proud Grandmother and Great Grandmother to Brandon M. Davis, wife Brenna and children Liam, Conlen and Pheby Davis. Erin E. Klimas, husband Ed and daughter Lila. Marisa Garfinkel, Cailah Garfinkel, Courtney Walpole, Caitlyn Walpole, Steven Jones, Cristin E. Murray and sons Kyler and Colson Tackett, Zacharie Staron, Alisabeth Staron and son Brayden, Jordan Reynolds, wife Crystal and daughter Emma, Keegan Walpole, Ethan Walpole and Ryan Walpole. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her. Friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, June 9, 2011, at noon in Holy Cross Catholic Church, 631 S. State St., Dover. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Dover. Friends may call Wednesday eve. from 6 until 8 p.m., at the Funeral Home of Michael J. Ambruso 1175 S. State St. Dover. Family suggests donations in her memory to the School Sisters of the Institute of Notre Dame Office of Development, 901 Aisquith St. Baltimore, MD 21202.
