DOVER - Marjorie Isbell Croft, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at Westminster Village in Dover, Del. The daughter of Dock F. and S. Blanche Isbell, she was born April 10, 1920 in Hartwell, Ga. She graduated from Anderson Girls High School in Anderson, S.C., where she was a member of the Beta Club, a national honorary organization dedicated to fostering scholarship, leadership, courage, and loyalty among high school students. She rose through the ranks at F.W. Woolworth Company, and was working as a dietician for the company in Raleigh, N.C. when she married John Alexander Croft Jr. in 1950. She devoted herself to her family, raising two sons, Douglas S. Croft and John A. Croft III, living in Zanesville, Ohio; White Plains, N.Y.; Wilmington, Del.; and Chadds Ford, Pa. She imparted to her sons her passion for reading. Her tastes ran from the sonnets of Shakespeare to the refined mysteries of Agatha Christie to the fast-paced detective novels of Robert B. Parker. When John retired from Columbia Gas in 1985, the couple moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C. In 1992, Marjorie suffered a major stroke, but following arduous rehabilitation, recovered and moved with her husband to Westminster Village. She lived an active life for the next decade, traveling often to Maryland's Eastern Shore, a place she loved. As her health declined and she lost mobility, she moved into Westminster's nursing facility, where she resided the past nine years. Her husband was her constant companion there, keeping her company and caring for her until his death in March of this year. In addition to her husband, John, Marjorie Croft is predeceased by sisters, Myrtle Mitchell, Dorothy Carson, and Sally Isbell; and brothers, Millard Isbell and Patrick Isbell. She is survived by sons, Douglas S., and his wife, Gail of Dover, and John A. III and his wife, Cathy of Lansdale, Pa.; and granddaughters, Bernadette E. and Amelia C. Croft. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, in the West Room of the Westminster Village Community Center, 1175 McKee Rd., Dover, DE. Memorial contributions may be made to Westminster Village, 1175 McKee Road, Dover DE 19904.
