CENTREVILLE, Md. - Marie Johnson Brown, of Centreville, Md., died Thursday, May 3, 2007, in the Chester River Hospital Center. She was 91.
Mrs. Brown, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Johnson, was born on Nov. 13, 1915 in Churchville, Md.
She received her early education in Hartford County schools and continued at Princess Anne Academy, presently known as the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore.
Mrs. Brown received a bachelor of science degree from Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va., and a master of education from Temple University in Philadelphia.
She took additional coursework at Bowie State and Morgan State universities and the University of Maryland.
Mrs. Brown's teaching career began in 1937 at Kennard High School where she taught science and home economics. While at Kennard, she met and married the late A. Kennard Brown. From their union one daughter, Niambi (Carole) was born.
Mrs. Brown retired 40 years later from Queen Anne's County High School.
Mrs. Brown's interests and activities have been numerous and varied. She was inducted into the Iota Sigma Lambda Society, Virginia State University. In 1965, she was a participant in the Wye Institute European Seminar and was a member of the Middle States Evaluation Team committee.
She sponsored the Future Homemakers of America at Queen Anne's County High School and served as a consultant to the FIIA leadership team at Hood College from 1964-1966.
On Queen Anne's Day in 1976, she was presented with a plaque acknowledging her services in education by the Duke of Marlborough.
In 1977, she was presented life membership in the Maryland Congress of Parents and Teachers.
Mrs. Brown served as president of the Maryland Home Economics Teachers Association and was also former secretary of the Queen Anne's County Education Association. She was a member of the Lucretia Kennard Homemakers Club and served on the program advisory board of the Queen Anne's County Extension Service. Mrs. Brown was also a member of the American Association of University Women.
Mrs. Brown was an active and dedicated member of New Life Community United Methodist Church and the Peninsula Delaware Conferences.
She served as a member of the Wesleyan Service Guild and when the two conferences joined, was the first African-American president of the Peninsula Delaware Conference of the United Methodist Women. On the conference level she served as publicity chairman for the Wesleyan Service Guild and dean of the School of Missions. She also served on the Board of Global Ministries and the United Methodist committee of relief, for which she traveled to Haiti and the African countries of Nigeria, Niger and Zimbabwe.
Mrs. Brown also served as vice president of the Core Planning Committee of the Northeastern Jurisdiction of United Methodist women. She was affiliated with Church Women United and the World Federation of Methodist Women.
Mrs. Brown will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Niambi (Carole) Brown Davis; grandsons, Amadi and Tabari Davis; granddaughter, Ayana Davis; Godson, George Brown; all of Centreville, and a host of relatives (Johnson, Dumore and Brown families) and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in New Life UM Church in Centerville, Md. where friends may call Tuesday between 7-8 p.m. and on the day of the funeral from noon-1 p.m.
Burial will be at the Chesterfield Cemetary in Centerville, Md.
