VIOLA - Margaret E. Hurd went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday 8/1/23. She was at home surrounded by her loving family.
Margaret was born in Goldsboro, MD to Floyd and Edith Allen, she grew up in Sandtown and attended Caesar Rodney elementary school, her parents bought a farm in Williamsville DE so she then attended Milford high school. Margaret has been a hard worker since she was a young teen working on the farm and picking tomatoes for 5 cents a basket on another farm. Later on, she met her lifelong partner "Hurdy" and they married on 7/26/1952. They spent their honeymoon at the Delaware state fair. Together they had 6 children. Margaret was a homemaker for many years until 1964 when she started working for General foods. Some years later she managed Arby's in Dover for several years and the McDonald's in Milford briefly. She then went on to work for Capitol school district in the cafeteria as a cashier. After retirement, she and her daughter started a cleaning business, she cleaned homes up until her late 80's.
In between her busy work schedule, raising kids and tending to her grandchildren, Margaret loved being at the beach, on the boat clamming and crabbing in the Indian River, she loved tending to her garden and the flowers in her yard. On holidays she loved spending time and cooking with the family. Margaret was truly one in a million. She took care of her husband and son day in and day out until they both passed from the horrible disease of cancer.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and all 5 siblings; her husband, Cornelius "Hurdy" Hurd; her son, Roy L. Hurd; granddaughter, Wanda K. Wootten (Walls); grandson, Stephen R. Hurd; daughter-in-law, Pamela J. Hurd; son-in-laws, Carl Steel and Kenneth O. Walls.
She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Givens (Robert), Felton, Patricia Poore (Bruce), Harrington, Bonnie Berry (Bobby), Dover; sons, John Hurd, Viola, and Roger Hurd (Phyllis), Viola. Margaret has 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren and a host of other children who grew up calling her "Mommom Hurd".
Funeral Service Tuesday, 8/8/23, 12 Noon at Pippin Funeral Home, Wyoming, DE. Friends may view beginning at 10 am. Burial will follow at Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington, DE
