Mabel Marylee Johnson

SEAFORD - Mabel Marylee Johnson, age 90, was called home on Friday, June 17, 2011, at Atlantic Shores Rehabilitation & Health Center, Millsboro. She was born on March 29, 1921, in Seaford, to the late Sinah E. Barkley and Charles Derrickson. Mabel was raised lovingly by Sinah and the late Harry J. Barkley (stepfather). She received her early education from Seaford schools and later graduated from Howard High School in Wilmington, in 1940. Mabel worked at Seaford Dupont Plant then later relocated to Baltimore, Md., and married William T. Clark and was blessed with two daughters, Terri L. Cooke (Clark) and Toni S. Clark. Upon her return to Seaford, Mabel was employed at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford, and the Stockley Center in Millsboro, where she retired. Following retirement, she became a foster grandparent at the Seaford Head Start, Seaford School District and Small Wonders Day Care where she enjoyed little ones and they enjoyed her as well. Mabel was a devoted member of John Wesley United Methodist Church and became a choir member, usher, and was active with the United Methodist Women and Sunday School. She knew and often said "God is still in control and taking care of me." Mabel loved to shop, cook and was an avid baker. She was locally known for her homemade ice cream and peanut brittle. Preceding her in death was a brother, James Barkley of New York, N.Y. She leaves to cherish and celebrate loving memories and legacy her two daughters, Terri L. Cooke (Russell Smith, friend) of Dover, Toni S. Clark of Wilmington; three grandsons, Terenda L. Clark (Richelle) of Seaford, Darryl A. Cooke of Jersey City, N.J., Duane A. Cooke, Sr. (LaShonda) of Salisbury, Md.; nine great-grandchildren, Willisha Williams of Seaford, Tyiana Clark of Seaford, Amiah Cooke of Seaford, Ty'Daja Cooke of Norfolk, Va., Tyler Clark of Seaford, Duane Cooke, Jr. of Salisbury, Md., Kayla Cooke of Salisbury, Md., Brianna Cooke of Salisbury, Md., Elysha Mason of Seaford; two sisters, Dorothy (Norvalee) Hayes, devoted sister and brother-in-law of Bethel, and Marie Barkley of Tavares, Fla.; devoted cousin and friend, Mattie Batson of Seaford; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Sat. June 25, at John Wesley UM Church, 3rd and Chandler St., Seaford, where friends may call two hours prior to the service. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Seaford. Arrangements by Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover.
