SEAFORD - M. Kathryn Short Barto Donovan 93 departed this life November 26, 2014 at her Seaford home surrounded by her family. She was born October 18, 1921 to the late Houston Short and Anne Mae Reed Short on a farm near Postles Corner Rd. (E. Dover). She grew up in Viola and graduated from Felton High School where she played basketball. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, William Short; and husband, Stanley Donovan. She is survived by her five children, Teresa Swafford (North Charleston, S.C.), Pat Foskey Thackery (Charles) (Hobe Sound, Fla.), Paula, Joseph, and Kathryn Barto and Peggy Koster (all of Seaford); sister-in-laws, Frances Short (Titusville, Fla.) and Edna Donovan (Seaford); seven grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, as well as her extended family from Nanticoke Senior Center Early Morning Exercise Group and Sam's Club (Salisbury, Md.). Kathryn had a full life from a farm girl picking apples, riding mules to school, raising her family and owning and operating KATHRYN'S Restaurant (s) 1960's-80's. She was owner of Stock Car # 76, a NASCAR enthusiast and sponsor of Kathryn's bowling team. She managed several area markets and worked with Our Lady of Lourdes Sodality. She and Stan traveled the U.S. via motor home and retired to Florida, returning to Seaford in 1991. She became a NMH volunteer at the age of 90, has supported many Disabled Vet causes and Cancer Research Centers. She was a cancer survivor. Kathryn was always quick to lend a hand and never met a stranger. Memorial Services will 11 a.m., Friday, December 5, 20104 at the Cranston Funeral Home, 300 Shipley St., Seaford, where friends may call from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Nanticoke Senior Center-Exercise Center, 1001 West Locust St., Seaford 19973.
