CHESTERTOWN, Md. - M. Franklin Legg Sr., of Chestertown, died at his home on Friday, March 14, 2008. He was 80.
Mr. Legg was born in Chestertown, the son of the late Marion and Marie Bennett Legg.
Mr. Legg was store manager for Kunkel Service Co. in Chestertown for 40 years, retiring in 1989.
He was a U.S. Army veteran.
In addition to his country, Mr. Legg served his community for many years in the volunteer Fire and Rescue service.
He joined the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Co. at age 16 in 1943, and was listed as an active life member. He served the company as a chief and chief engineer for several of those years.
In 2007, he was presented the Governor's Citation Award for 53 years of fire service.
Mr. Legg was also a charter member and originator of the Kent & Queen Anne's Rescue Squad in Chestertown.
He was a member of the Maryland Fire Chiefs Association and in 2007 was inducted into the Kent & Queen Anne's Volunteer Fire, EMS and Rescue Association.
Also in 2007, Mr. Legg was the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Co. nominee for the Maryland State Fireman's Association Marbery F. Gates Service Cup award.
He was also a charter member of the Chestertown Elks lodge 2474 and a member of the Frank Jarmon American Legion post, Chestertown.
Mr. Legg enjoyed fishing, hunting, crabbing, and collecting decoys.
Mr. Legg is survived by his wife of 63 years, Thelma Legg; two sons, David Legg and Franklin Legg Jr., both of Chestertown; one grandson; one sister, Harriett Lusby of Kennedyville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services with fire company Honors will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in Fellows Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, where friends and family may call after noon.
Interment will follow in Chester Cemetery, Chestertown.
