She attended Georgetown High School (Class of 1963) and the University of Delaware. Carol graduated from the University of South Carolina, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She obtained her Masters in Education from Delaware State University. Ms. Short was pre-deceased by her parents Marjorie Townsend Bramhall in 2002 and Robert Alden Short in 1977. Carol was an English teacher at Milford High School 18 years and at Delaware Technical and Community College in Georgetown. She retired in 1997. Before teaching, Ms. Short worked as an airline hostess for Capitol International Airways, an executive Secretary for Peachtree Hyatt-Regency Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia as well as the Sheraton Boston Hotel. She was an assistant foreign student advisor at Harvard Law School and personal secretary to U.S. Congressman Donald Reigle as well as Senator Strom Thurman. Carol enjoyed Shakespeare, reading, travel; but most of all she enjoyed being with her family and friends. She particularly enjoyed being a life-changing influence on her students. Carol's loving presence and warm smile will be forever remembered in the hearts of her loved ones and friends. She was a great listener, a charming conversationalist and a lot of fun to be with. Carol interviewed with the Cape Gazette in 1996 about having terminal cancer: "When you first hear the news, it's like being at a ball game that's called because of the rain. You feel like you're out of the game." Short pursued a cure through large cancer centers, nutritional strategies, acupuncture, yoga, therapy, support groups and the Internet. Carol is survived by two sisters, Deborah Short Merkle and her husband Martin of Portland, Oregon and Nancy Short Vickers and her husband Ron of Dover, Delaware and her brother, Robert Alden Short, Jr. of Maui, Hawaii, her niece Tessa Jane Merkle of Portland and her nephews, Lucas Burns Merkle of Rehoboth Beach and Will Short Vickers of Dover. Carol is also survived by her uncles, Eben Bramhall and his wife Evelyn of Newark, George Bramhall and his wife Sue of Seaford and Wellington Bramhall and his wife Bobbie of Banner Elk, NC and her aunts Ann Wilson and her husband Bob of Milton and Iva Booth of Georgetown and her uncle Stanley Marvel and his wife Jeanie of Melbourne Beach, Florida. Finally, Ms. Short is survived by her many close friends, Donna Fischer of Lewes, Bill Pusey of Ocean View, Martha Jane Donovan of Milton, Debbie Brittingham of Millsboro, Darlene Vreeland of Milford, Mary Ann Chorman of Milton, Angie Parks of Salisbury, Mary Ann Lining of Greenville, SC, Lucille Trasatti of Milton, her oncologist, Dr. Sandra Foote of Milford and her loving Shitzi, Liz. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 12 noon at Epworth United Methodist Church, 19285 Holland Glade Rd., Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Friends may call Monday night from 6 to 8 p.m. at Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown. Burial will be private.
