Pittard, 91 Georgetown - Louise Hastings Pittard peacefully went to her heavenly home surrounded by her family on August 19, 2015. Born in Easton, Md. on January 25, 1924 to Harry E. and Myra Lankford Hastings, Louise was raised near Reliance and attended Oak Grove School, later graduating from Seaford High School. After high school, Louise was employed at the DuPont nylon plant as an office worker where she met her husband George, whom she married in November 1945. When their three daughters were young, she volunteered her time as a Brownie Scout leader and Bible School teacher and also wrote the social column for The Sussex Countian. She returned to the workforce when her girls were older, joining the State of Delaware's Division of Libraries in 1961. She thoroughly enjoyed and made many friends on her Sussex County Bookmobile route in the 1960s and 1970s. Later she worked for the Books-by-Mail program in Dover until her retirement in 1990. Throughout her life, Louise traveled extensively within the U.S., but her trip of a lifetime was to the United Kingdom with her daughter Elaine where she saw the Queen of England. An avid reader, even after being slowed by a stroke she insisted on checking out more than 10 books at a time from the local library. Louise filled her retired years with much activity--learning new things, serving as a Clinton delegate at the 1992 Democratic National Convention, attending theater productions, working at the election polls, and especially enjoyed her time in the Red Hat Society. More than anything, she delighted in being with her beloved grandchildren. Louise was an active member and elder of the Georgetown Presbyterian Church until her health decline, serving also as a trustee and Bible study leader of the Tabitha Circle. In later years she looked forward to her monthly events with the special GPC ladies of the 'lunch bunch' game-playing group. In addition to her parents, Louise was preceded in death by her husband George D. Pittard, Jr. in 1993, as well as brothers Howard, Harry E., and J. Webster Hastings, all of Seaford. She is survived by her children, Linda P. Carter of Millsboro, Elaine P. Betts of Dover, and Debra P. and Daniel Bryan of Georgetown; grandchildren, Erin C. Bryan Sutliff (Brian) of Lakeland, Fla., Chad D. Betts (Colleen) of Milton, and Tyler J. Bryan of Georgetown; great-grandson, Cohen C. Betts; sister, Evelyn H. James of Seaford; and several nephews and nieces. Services will be held on Sunday, August 23 at Short Funeral Service, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, Del. 19947 at 2 p.m., with a viewing from 1 – 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Union Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Georgetown Presbyterian Church, 203 N. Bedford St., Georgetown, DE 19947 or the Georgetown Public Library, 123 W. Pine St., Georgetown, Del. 19947.
