AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Livio (Leo) Raffio, of St. Augustine, passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 4, 2012. He was born in Boston, Mass., on Nov. 30, 1911. He retired to Palm Coast, in 1986. Leo was preceded in death by his beloved wife of thirty-eight years, Mary Palmisano; and two brothers, Alex and Dominick Raffio. He is survived by two daughters, Leona Raffio of St. Augustine, and Maria Degnats and her husband (Dick) of Milford, Del.; two brothers, Louis Raffio of Palm Coast, and Alfred Raffio of New Rochelle, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Jennifer Brown and her husband (Josh) of Egg Harbor Township, N.J.; two great-granddaughters, Lyla and Evalyn Brown; and many nieces and nephews whom he held close to his heart. He was an Electrician by trade and was a member of IBEW Local #3 Flushing, N.Y. During World War II, he worked as an electrician at the ELCO Shipyard in Bayonne, N.J. readying the PT boats (including PT 109) for the war effort. He was also a former member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Greenwich, Conn. He was a renaissance man who was not only accomplished in carpentry, masonry, plumbing, etc, but also noted for his cooking and baking. He loved classical music, especially opera. He was also an avid pinochle player, a pastime he often shared with his granddaughter. After retirement Leo also began creating beautiful needlepoint and carpentry pieces, many of which were his own design and treasured by his daughters. You could always find Leo "tinkering" in his garage workshop. He truly had an inventor's curious mind. He was an avid golfer, bowler, and fisherman. He spent many days on Long Island Sound with his son-in-law. After retirement he could be found fishing on the Flagler Beach Pier. He was a member of Palm Coast Elks # 2709 and Central Florida Chapter Local Union No. 3 I.B.E.W. Retirees Association. He was also a member of St. Anastasia Church, St. Augustine. Leo celebrated his 100th birthday with friends and family on November 30, 2011. He was a loving, caring, and humble man who was always the first to help others. He lived a full life and will be missed deeply by all who knew him. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Apostle Church, Seabury Ave., Milford, on Saturday, April 14, 2012, at 2 p.m. Burial service will be Tuesday, April 17, at 1 p.m., at Beechwoods Cemetery, New Rochelle, N.Y.
