Leonard Andrew Wanex Sr.

Andrew Wanex, Sr., 100 Easton - Leonard (Buster) Andrew Wanex, Sr. of Easton, Md., formerly of Federalsburg, died Monday, August 11, 2014 at Hospice of Queen Anne's in Centerville. Born February 6, 1914 in Secretary, Leonard was the son of the late Joseph Wanex, Sr. and Antoinette Mitchell Wanex. Leonard was a farmer, waterman, and independent truck driver prior to being hired by Service Trucking Company as a long haul trucker of freight in the northeastern United States. In 1967 he was hired by Tri Gas & Oil Co, Inc. as a long haul trucker of fuel oil and propane from which he retired in 1988. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Regina Coeli Council #2274 in Easton. Leonard served during World War II in the Army Air Forces from 1941 to 1946, serving in India and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. He received a Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, and World War II Victory Ribbon. Leonard celebrated his 100th birthday in February surrounded by many family and friends which brought him great joy. He will be remembered by many as one of the kindest and gentlest of men. In addition to his parents, Leonard was preceded in death by his wife Lillian Marie Holecheck Wanex, who died on October 28, 2012; five brothers, Frank, Joseph, Leo, Anthony, and Johnny Wanex; and five sisters, Mary Wielgosz, Sophie Moxey, Frances Moxey, Elizabeth Davidson, and Agnes Birch. Leonard is survived by his three sons, Leonard A. Wanex, Jr. and his wife Susan of Arnold, MD, Robert C. Wanex and Rhonda Lowe of Marietta, GA, and Jeffrey A. Wanex of Nashville, TN; two grandchildren, Andrew R. Wanex of Roswell, GA and Brooke M. Wanex of Pooler, GA; and an extensive family of loved ones. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 15, 2014 from 6 to 8 PM at the Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market, MD where a rosary service will be held at 7:30 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 11 AM at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Easton. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery in Easton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Talbot Hospice Foundation, Hospice of Queen Anne's, or Sts. Peter and Paul Church.
