Karl M. 'Chub' Smith, 85

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Karl M. "Chub" Smith, of Chestertown, died Sunday, March 16, 2008, in Chester River Hospital, Chestertown. He was 85.

Mr. Smith was born on July 29, 1922, in Freehold, N.J., son of the late Tunis and Nettie Parker Smith.

While living in Freehold, he was a grain and dairy farmer.

He had served Freehold Township publicly for 12 years as a committeeman and mayor.

In 1964, Mr. Smith purchased a farm near Chestertown and moved to the area.

He worked for the Messer-Debnam Farms and David Bramble farm in Tolchester, retiring in the late 1990s. He enjoyed vegetable gardening.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Frederick T. Smith.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 64 years, Karlyn Jean Palmer Smith; six children, E. Jean Anthony and her husband Bruce of Chestertown, Karl Richard "Dick" Smith of Millsboro, Del., Barbara L. Pippin and her husband Robert H. of Chestertown, James E. Smith and his wife Beth, Donald T. Smith and his wife Kim, and John T. Smith and his wife Jennifer, all of Worton; a sister, Carolyn Flock of Colts Neck, N.J.; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St., Galena, with Pastor Mel Brindley officiating. Burial will be private.

The family suggests memorials may be offered to Kent Ag Center, P.O. Box 386, Chestertown, MD 21620.
