Karen Marie Dorris, 60
Karen Marie Dorris passed away at home on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 surrounded by loving caregivers. Karen was born on December 20, 1960 in Wilmington, Del., daughter of the late Ralph W. and Ann (Palmarella) Dorris.
She was predeceased by both parents; brother, Michael T. Dorris; brother-in-law, Timothy J. Sullivan; and nephew, Hunter M. Dorris.
She is survived by sisters, Jeanne Dorris Bahnson (Santa Fe, N.M.) and Sheila A. Sullivan (Ocean View, Del.); aunt, Lena (Palmarella) O'Toole; nieces, Riyan (Sullivan) Dansby, Brianne Sullivan, Shelby Dorris and Morgan Dorris; nephews, Noah Bahnson, Trevor Bahnson, Cody Dorris and Grant Dorris; and a host of cousins, friends and caregivers.
Karen grew up in the Fairfax neighborhood of Wilmington, attending the Charles W. Bush School until age 20. She later worked at Elwyn as a data entry clerk for the Internal Revenue Service - which jokingly became a "cause for concern" among family and friends. Karen enjoyed doing word search puzzles, loved to dance, could put away a cheese steak in record time and was able to recite every U.S. State Capital by memory. She enjoyed family trips to the beach and was doted on by her mom, Ann, and close friends Betty Rago and Helen Pietropaulo.
Karen had a pure heart and a joyful spirit coupled with a definite stubborn streak of independence. Her silly laugh and exasperated eye rolls will be forever etched in our memories. We are comforted knowing she's at peace, being welcomed by her mom, dad, brother and all those who loved her so dearly in life.
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation at Short Funeral Services, Georgetown Chapel, 609 E. Market Street, Georgetown, DE 19947 on Tuesday morning, April 27, 2021 from 10 - 11 a.m. Followed by a graveside service and burial at 1 p.m., Cathedral Cemetery, 2400 Lancaster Ave., Wilmington, DE 19805. All those in attendance must wear a mask and adhere to social distancing and gathering protocols.
Karen's family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for Vitas Hospice (especially Nurse Stacy) and for the compassionate, attentive staff at Spencer House for their loving care over the last several years - with special thanks to Karen's favorite caregiver, Sonja Gamble.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army Developmental Disabilities Program, P.O. Box 1304, Millsboro, DE 19966 or the charity of your choice.
