Karen Alfreda (Scott) Hucks, 60

WILMINGTON - Karen Alfreda (Scott) Hucks of Wilmington went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, in Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. She was 60.

Karen was born Aug. 31, 1947, in Wilmington, the first child to the late John and Christina Scott.

She attended Lockerman High School, Denton, Md., graduating on June 6, 1966.

Karen was united in Holy Matrimony on June 16, 1980, to the late Rudolph Hucks.

She had a disability since childhood, but she was a very independent person.

She loved to cook and sing and she loved children. She started a daycare in her home, being a caregiver to her nieces and to many children in her neighborhood.

Karen grew up in Marydel, Md., attending Ferrell's United Methodist Church, which later merged with Mt. Zion. She was a former member of the Zion Gospel Singers, Zionettes, Community Choir Ensemble and Voices in Unity Mass Choir.

Even though she moved to Wilmington, she would occasionally come home on the weekend to sing with the choir.

When Karen moved to Wilmington, she joined Central Baptist Church. Later, she was affiliated with Set Free Righteous Living Ministries under the leadership of the Rev. Tyrone L. Gilliams Jr.

Each Sunday she would travel up and down the highway with her riding partners, cousins Matlene Harding and the Rev. Melissa Bordley.

At Set Free Righteous Living Ministries, Karen was involved with the Bread of Heaven Food Ministry. She was also affiliated with the Women of Prayer and Power Ministries founded by the Rev. Melissa Bordley.

Karen was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph Hucks; parents, John and Christina Scott; and brother, John Howard Scott.

She leaves to cherish her memories one son, Michael Scott and his friend of Bear; four brothers, James and his wife Helen of Dover, Thomas of Wilmington, Samuel of Marydel and Matthew and his wife Jean of Marydel; five grandchildren, Michael Jr., Dominque, Courtney, Kamron and Kobé; mother-in-law, Novesta Hucks of New Castle; four brothers-in-law and six sisters-in-law; one aunt, Elsie Teat of Capital Nursing Home in Dover; two very close classmates who were like sisters, Janice Price and Dorothy Brice; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and church family.

A viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Dover.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Calvary Baptist Church, Del. 8, Dover, where friends may view two hours prior.

Burial will be at Mt. Zion Church Cemetery, Marydel.
