Julia (Neal) Vickers, 92
DOVER - Julia (Neal) Vickers, of Dover, died Saturday, April 12, 2008, in Dover. She was 92.
Born in Raleigh, N.C., daughter of Thomas and Lenora Neal, Ms. Vickers' life was a scrapbook of many of the events that shaped the 20th century.
Upon graduation from high school, in the pre-war Depression era, she found work with the New Deal sponsored Works Progress Administration in Raleigh.
While working there, she married Cecil Raymond Vickers of Durham, N.C.
After Pearl Harbor, Ms. Vickers and her husband moved to Wilmington, N.C., where Cecil worked in Wilmington's thriving shipyard that was churning out Liberty Ships to aid in the war effort.
After the war, she and her husband resettled in Durham, only soon to join the 1950s migration of Americans heading south to make new homes in Florida.
Settling in Fort Lauderdale, she and her husband worked and made their home there for many years while their children attended and graduated from school.
After her husband died suddenly in 1973, she continued to head the finance department of Jefferson's Super Store in Fort Lauderdale, where she worked for many years and continued to do so until her retirement in the late 1970s.
After retirement, she moved back to Raleigh to be with friends and relations, but soon moved to Dover to be near her daughter and grandchildren.
For many years, Ms. Vickers resided at Luther Towers, Dover.
Ms. Vickers' survivors include a son, Raymond of Newport Beach, Calif.; a daughter, Deborah Scheller of Dover; and two grandchildren, Wells and Merritt Scheller, both of Dover.
There will be a celebration of Julia Vickers' life held later in the spring.
