Joseph Michael Melchionda, 76

Joseph Michael Melchionda of Camden died Sunday, May 13, 2007, in Capitol Nursing Home, Dover. He was 76.

Mr. Melchionda was born May 18, 1930, in Hoboken, N.J., son of the late Paul and Caroline (Manopelli) Melchionda.

After graduating school, he joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was also on President Truman's Honor Guard.

After the service he went to work as a draftsman at Teterboro Airport for Bendix Aviation, where he worked for about 10 years. He then went to ITT in Nutley, N.J., where he worked on electrical components for the space program for Daven Corp. in Livingston, N.J., building for NASA, Apollo and the LEM. He retired in 1992 from Cosmair Inc. in Clark, N.J., where he was a packaging engineer.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gloria Joan Penner Melchionda; a son, Robert Melchionda and his wife, Patricia of Magnolia; a daughter, Tracey Lowcher and her husband, Robert of Sykesville, Md.; and five grandchildren, Ryan Lowcher, Christopher Lowcher, Megan Lowcher, Matthew Melchionda and Thomas Melchionda.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Del. 10), Dover.

A Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Holy Cross Catholic Church, 631 S. State Street, Dover.

Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Alzheimer's Association, 2306 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805.
