GREENWOOD - Joseph Makovec of Greenwood, formerly of Harrington, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, in Country Rest Home, Greenwood. He was 84.
Mr. Makovec was born Feb. 20, 1922, in Czechoslovakia, son of the late Michael and Mary (Valkovic) Makovec.
In 1931, Mr. Makovec immigrated to the United States with his mother and two sisters to join his father on the family farm west of Harrington.
Mr. Makovec was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Flaherty DE 135 as an electrician's mate during World War II.
He was a lifelong member of St. Bernadette's Catholic Church. He was proud to be one of the builders of St. Bernadette's during its construction.
He enjoyed dancing in his younger years and loved fishing in the Delaware Bay as well as surf fishing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Anna Wroten.
He is survived by two sisters, Pauline E. "Polly" Maloney and Mary Rothermel, both of Milford; and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Bernadette's Catholic Church.
Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Del. 14, Harrington.
The family requests that no flowers be sent and that instead memorial contributions be made to St. Bernadette's Catholic Church, 109 Dixon St., Harrington, DE 19952.
