DOVER - Joseph H. Sudler of Dover departed this life Friday, April 13, 2007, in Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 83.
He was born Dec. 12, 1923, in Greenspring, son of the late Jacob and Clara Sudler. He was the fifth son of eight children.
Mr. Sudler was united in marriage to the late Idella Paynter in 1944 and to this union they were blessed with two children, one son and one daughter.
He received his early education in Delaware. He furthered his education at various colleges and universities including Hampton, Penn State, Virginia State, Shippensburg University and Philadelphia College. He graduated from Delaware State College, now known as Delaware State University in 1948. He joined the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and was a life member.
Mr. Sudler joined the Navy in 1944 and was honorably discharged in 1946. He had the privilege of visiting the home of several presidents including Roosevelt, Truman, Hoover, Washington and Andrew Jackson.
He lived a very full and colorful life. To know Joe was to love him. He touched the lives of many students and government officials. He road the congressional train with congressman Bill Gray and had lunch at the White House.
Mr. Sudler moved to Accomack, Va., where he taught school. From there he moved to Philadelphia in 1952 where he operated a trolley for the city. He became a parole officer in 1953 and retired as a parole supervisor in 1983. Joe and his family loved to travel. They traveled through 44 states and Canada.
He joined Calvary Baptist Church in Dover after returning to Delaware. He enjoyed gospel music.
Mr. Sudler preceded in death by his brothers, Alfred, Frank, Wallace and Austin.
He leaves to cherish his memories one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Sudler Jr. and wife Mae of Dover; one daughter, Sherylann Sudler of Dover; two grandsons, Joseph Sudler III of Dover and Randy Smith of Philadelphia; two granddaughters, Adrienne Pyatt of Philadelphia and Shemaria McKnight of Philadelphia; eight great-grandchildren, five girls and three boys; three sisters, Marjarine Summers of Smyrna, Katherine Bleen of Smyrna and Necolial Turner (William) of New Castle; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous friends.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Calvary Baptist, Del. 8, where friends may view one hour prior. Burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. in the Veterans Cemetery in Bear.
