John P. "Jack" Pharo of Rock Hall died Monday, Dec. 25, 2006, in Chester River Hospital Center, Chestertown. He was 81.
Mr. Pharo was born Jan. 10, 1925, in Bethlehem, Pa., son of the late Merritt and Nola (VanHorne) Pharo.
He was a 1950 graduate of Penn State School of Architecture and Engineering.
Mr. Pharo was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Navy.
He practiced architecture in Bethlehem, Lehigh and North Hampton counties, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C. and New Jersey from 1950 to 1980. He was licensed to practice in the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and Arizona. He and his partner Charles Haas of Pharo and Hass Architects practiced from 1952 to 1982 where he designed and oversaw the buildings of numerous, schools, colleges, churches, public buildings and residences.
Mr. Pharo was a self-employed architect in Kent, Queen Anne's, and Cecil counties since 1986. His designs included the Chestertown Presbyterian Church, the Episcopal Church, Stevensville, Chester River Yacht Club, Dr. Neil Brayton's Medical Center, F.A.M. and N. Inc., and the renovation of People's Bank. His work in Galena included the Olivet Pentecostal Church of Love and the Galena Funeral Home.
He enjoyed his time working with the students at Echo Hill.
Mr. Pharo was a member of the Masonic Scottish Rite Lodge 286, Bethlehem and was a 32nd-degree mason.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Judith (Drzewicki) Pharo; two daughters and a son-in-law, Sandra and Keith Kumm of Tucson, Ariz., and Karen Schade of Dallas, three grandchildren, Christina Schade, Jennifer Schade and Alexis Schade; a brother and a sister-in-law, Dale and Claire Pharo of Bethlehem; a niece, Holly Bachman; and a great-niece, Mylea Bachman.
Services will be 1 p.m. Jan. 6 in the Chestertown Presbyterian Church.
Burial will be private.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Kent Center, 903 Washington Ave., Suite 4, Chestertown, MD 21620.
