John Gavin Whitten

John Gavin Whitten, 90

DOVER - John Gavin Whitten of Dover died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007, in his home. He was 90.

Mr. Whitten was born Feb. 14, 1917, in Conway, Texas.

He grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, and moved out to California in the 1930s.

Mr. Whitten worked for several years with the CCC and in 1939 he entered the U.S. Army.

He served in the U.S. Army for 30 years, retiring in 1969. Mr. Whitten served during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars.

He retired to Barrington, N.H., and started a second career working for the State of New Hampshire Unemployment Office.

After his retirement from the state, he traveled, and finally in 2000 he and his wife moved to Dover.

Mr. Whitten enjoyed gardening.

He was a loving husband and father.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Margaret Whitten, on Jan. 1, 2003.

Mr. Whitten is survived by his daughter, Irene Case and her husband Tom.

A full military funeral will be 9 a.m. Wednesday in Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery.
