GREENWOOD - John F. Mishler went to his heavenly home at 8:50 a.m. on May 11, 2018. He died at home peacefully, surrounded by his family.
John was born Feb. 1, 1931 in Lagrange, Ind. He married Dema (Chupp) on Feb. 5, 1949.
John became an ordained minister at the age of 25 and served as the pastor of Talcum Mennonite Church in Kentucky. He also attended college to become a teacher and in 1963, he moved to Delaware to be a teacher and the principal of the Greenwood Mennonite School. He became pastor and then a bishop of the Greenwood Mennonite Church and also served as a bishop, overseer and interim pastor in many churches throughout the United States. He was the founding pastor of Cannon Mennonite Church in 1976 and served there until he retired.
Along with serving in churches, he was also a very talented carpenter and had two businesses, Mishler Construction and The Golden Rule Workshop. In his retirement, he managed the Seaford Self Storage.
John Mishler enjoyed golfing and gardening, but his primary passion in life was people. He was a friend to all and his greatest desire was for all to know and love Jesus. His heart was especially tender towards those who were struggling or needing extra attention.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Freida; his sisters, Lydia, Goldie and Annie; his brothers, Amos, Noah and Harry; and his parents, Fred and Mary.
He is survived by Dema A., his loving wife of 69 years; his daughters, Fern (Duane) and Elvida (Curtis) both of Milford; son-in-law, Clinton of Wagener, S.C.; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Along with these, he is also survived by his brother, Ervin Mishler of Sturgis, Mich.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
The viewing will be at Living Hope Fellowship, which meets at Sam Yoder Farm, 89 Hunting Quarter Rd., Houston, DE 19954, on Thursday, May 17, 2018 from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be held at the Greenwood Mennonite School on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 2 p.m. There will be an hour of visitation preceding the service and the burial will be held at the Greenwood Mennonite Church following the service.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be given to Greenwood Mennonite School or Living Hope Fellowship building fund.
