John Edward "Big John" Johnson, 45
FREDERICA - John Edward "Big John" Johnson of Frederica died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2006, in Athens (Ga.) Regional Medical Center. He was 45.
Mr. Johnson was born July 31, 1961, in Milford, son of the late James J. and Dorothy M. Johnson.
He attended Lake Forest High School.
Mr. Johnson was a local handyman and mechanic. He was always willing to help anyone at anytime.
He enjoyed the outdoors, duck hunting, trapping and crabbing. The Murderkill River was a special place to him, and you could always see the twinkle of joy in his eyes while he prepared for a day on the river. He also enjoyed watching his favorite team, the Redskins, and watching and attending NASCAR races.
At the early age of 16, Mr. Johnson joined the Frederica Vol. Fire Co., following in the footsteps of both of his parents. As a child, he attended firemen parades, riding on the fire truck while wearing a fireman uniform his father had made for him. His love and dedication for the fire service inspired him to attend fire training schools.
He was a certified emergency medical technician, past fire chief, past assistant chief, chief engineer, member of the board of directors, and at the time of his death, chairman of the Ladder Truck Committee. He received Frederica"s top responder award for the past 10 years. This award is given to the fireman that responds to the highest numbers of fire alarms during the year.
Mr. Johnson also enjoyed traveling to parades and attending shows with his fellow fireman friend, Frank Beebe, and entering Frederica"s 1936 Reo - the first fire truck to be put into service at the existing fire house - in competitions. Upon returning with a trophy, "Big John" would say "Frederica did it again," with a big smile.
He is survived by two sisters, Norma M. Owens of Frederica and Patricia Harrington of Toccoa, Ga.; three nieces, Ashley Owens of Frederica, Sheila Chasteen of Athens and Theresa Griffin of Chicago; two great-nieces, Brianna Owens of Frederica and Aubrey Owens of Milford; three nephews, John Owens of Frederica, Michael Harrington of Smyrna and Shawn Harrington of Frederica; and a great-nephew, Nathan Button of Milford.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Highway, Harrington.
