SMYRNA - John Charles Matter, Jr., "Jack", age 80, of Smyrna, formerly of Philadelphia and Bensalem, Pa., died peacefully on May 18, 2015. Jack is the son of the late John C. and Florence S. Matter. He is survived by his children, Carol O'Toole, John Matter (Helen) and Eileen Whaley (Tom); his sister, Charlotte Park; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; stepchildren, David Jacobson (Susan) and Donna Jacobson. He was the loving husband of the late Helen (Leary) and the late Shirley (Jacobson) and friend to so many in his community. Friends and family will forever cherish his razor-sharp wit, his signature smile and contagious laugh. Jack was born on October 29, 1934 in Philadelphia and raised in Germantown, Philadelphia. He served the Philadelphia Fire Department from 1956 and retired as Battalion Chief in 1979. He moved on to Bensalem, Pa., where he served as Township Fire Marshal and then served as Bucks County Fire Marshal from 1987 to 2000. Jack was always on the move; he was an extensive traveler, having visited 48 U.S. states, and was a terror behind the wheel of a golf cart. He loved fishing, online card games and making people laugh. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Jack's life on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Bon Ayre Community Center, 700 Saks Street, Smyrna, DE 19977. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Jack's memory be sent to Philadelphia Second Alarmers, 2900 Roberts Ave., Phila., PA 19129. Condolence letters may be sent by visiting www.fariesfuneralhome.com.
