John A. Hartnett, 70

DOVER - John A. Hartnett of Dover died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2006, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 70.

Mr. Hartnett was born in Dover, son of the late Frank J. and Ruth (Cooper) Hartnett.

He received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Notre Dame in 1956, and upon his graduation entered into the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a first lieutenant until his discharge in 1962.

While stationed at an Air Force Installation in Lake City, Tenn., he met and married Nancy Jeanne Jolly in 1959.

Upon his discharge, Mr. Hartnett entered and managed his family's businesses, M.A. Hartnett Inc. and Hartnett Realty Co., until retiring in 1995.

He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather, and had throughout the years enjoyed fishing and gardening, and in later years was an avid reader and had a special interest in classical music.

Mr. Hartnett was a lifelong member of Holy Cross Parish and a longtime member of the Camden-Wyoming Rotary Club and the Delmarva Lumbermen's Association.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret M. Hartnett, in 2001.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Jeanne Hartnett of Dover; seven children and their spouses, Ann C. Hartnett and her husband, Peter Feola of South Orange, N.J., Joseph William and Gail Hartnett of Tampa, Fla., Mary Elizabeth and Steven Locke of Mickleton, N.J., James Andrew and Kelley Hartnett of Finksburg, Md., Barbara Jeanne and Wayne Cruse of Tampa, Robert Edward Hartnett of Batimore and John Christopher Hartnett of Philadelphia; a sister and a brother-in-law, Catherine L. and James Hammond of Manchester, N.H.; and nine grandchildren, Elizabeth Locke, Ryan Locke, Brian Hartnett, Paige Hartnett, Mariah Cruse, Jacob Cruse, Tara Hartnett, Eva Feola and Jonathan Feola.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the Funeral Home of Michael J. Ambruso, 1175 S. State St., Dover.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Holy Cross Church, South State Street, Dover.
