DOVER - Joan (Arne) Folwell passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017 surrounded by her loving family and furry companion, Squeeky. Joan was born and raised in Queens, N.Y. Soon after completing high school, she moved to Philadelphia where she lived with her sister, Justine and met her husband, William Nathan Folwell, whom she married in 1949. During her time in Philadelphia, she worked as a secretary for the Sun Oil Company. Soon after their marriage, Joan moved to Pennsville, N.J. with her husband where they started a family. In 1964 she began her position as executive secretary to the president of the Sunbeam Publishing Company in Salem, N.J., from which she retired in 1979. She and her husband then moved to Morehead City, N.C. where they lived for over a decade until moving to Dover to be closer to their family. Following the Folwell family faith, she became a member of the Society of Friends, and continued to be an active member for the rest of her life. Her favorite pastimes included crocheting, gardening, sewing, and cooking. She was also an avid reader and diarist. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, William Nathan Folwell, who passed away in 2011; and by her siblings, Joseph, Anne, Albert, Justine, Jean Paul, and Gabriel. She is survived by her two children, Nathan A. Folwell and his wife Carla of Pennsville, N.J., and Denise J. Folwell and her husband James Chu of Gaithersburg, Md.; one sister, Elaine Ryan of Florida; and three grandchildren, Lauren Folwell, Nicole Folwell, and Evan Chu. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Camden Friends Meeting, located at 122 East Camden-Wyoming Avenue, Camden, DE 19934.
