MILFORD - Jivonne Atele Powell, departed this life Monday, September 28, 2009. He is the son of Deborah Hayes, and was born April 6, 1982 in Milford. He was baptized at Bethel AME Church under the guardianship of his godparents, James and Leona McDuffie. He received his education in the Milford school district and Sussex Technical High School. He attended college at Cheyney University and Wesley College. JV, as he was known, was employed by Southern Wine & Spirits and was previously employed at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institute in Wilmington, and in other capacities. He was an avid sports fan and loved working with children. He was involved in activities with Milford Parks and Recreation in his early life. He was a big guy who had an equally loving heart and smile. He always had something funny to say to whomever he came in contact with. Anyone who JV befriended has a memory of him that they will cherish forever. He always had something to say, and nobody could get the last word in no matter how hard they tried, and they did, they were fortunate. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Henry and Dorothy Powell; his great-grandmother, Georgia Waples; two uncles, Ronald Fullman and Lamont Powell; and his godparents, James and Leona McDuffie. A candlelight vigil will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, October 5, 2009, at the BiCentennial Park in Milford. Funeral Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 6, 2009, at the St. Paul United Methodist Church, 300 North St., Milford. Interment will be in the Old Hickory Cemetery, Slaughter Neck.
