Jean W. Prettyman, 88
Jean W. Prettyman passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving children, on Sunday, December 25, 2022.
Jean was born November 7, 1934 in Sunbury, PA to the late Marlin F. Witmer and Jennie M. (Romberger) Witmer. She attended West Chester State Teacher's College (now West Chester University) where she earned a degree in Music Education and met her husband, David J. Prettyman.
Living in the Dover area since 1961, Jean taught music at Dover Central Middle School and at all four Dover elementary schools, touching the lives of thousands of children and their families. Jean also taught piano lessons in her home and lead the church choir at Whatcoat UMC in Camden, where she was a faithful member for close to 60 years.
After retiring from teaching, Jean had a sewing business in her home, then a business selling Premiere Designs jewelry. Through the years, she was an active member of the Community Players theater group, The Community Singers, The Red Hat Ladies, and The Singing Ladies of the Round Table Club, which she went on to conduct in later years. Jean also led a singing group at Westminster Village where she lived for the last 11 years and served in many capacities there.
Jean loved playing cards and games of all kinds. She was an avid reader, loved to do the puzzles in the newspaper, and helped sew toys for children in the hospital.
Jean is survived by her three children, Shirley Scrafford and husband Andy, of Burke, VA, Craig Prettyman of Wilmington, DE and Linda Sams and husband Bryan, of Lititz, PA; her grandchildren, Shaun Scrafford, Kathryn Scrafford, Christopher Scrafford, Melissa Detweiler and Michelle Rachko; as well as seven great-grandchildren; and her sister, Bonita Madison of Frederick, MD.
In addition to her parents; Jean was predeceased in death by her husband, David J. Prettyman; and her brother, Lamar Witmer; as well as many friends that were like family.
A celebration of life service will be held at Whatcoat Church in Camden on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at 2pm. A separate service will be held for the Westminster community at a date to be determined. Memorial contributions can be made to Whatcoat Church, 16 N. Main St., Camden, DE 19934.
Letters of condolence may be sent, and guestbook signed at www.torbertfuneral.com
