CLAYTON - Janet A. Horn of Clayton died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006, in Green Valley Pavilion, Smyrna. She was 77.
Mrs. Horn was born May 18, 1929, in Wilmington, daughter of the late C. Raymond and Louisa (Moore) Dickerson.
She was a 1947 graduate of P.S. DuPont High School in Wilmington and attended Beacom College. She earned her Early Childhood Education certificate from the University of Delaware.
Mrs. Horn"s passion in life was being involved in the nurturing and education of children. She founded Horn"s Kindergarten in Clayton in 1967 and continued to operate it until the start of Delaware public kindergarten. She later began Ewell"s St. Paul Preschool, also in Clayton, where she taught until 1986.
Following her retirement, she provided daycare for her grandchildren and the children of close family friends.
Additionally, her involvement with children included teaching Sunday school for many years, serving as a Cub Scout den mother as well as a Girl Scout Leader.
She enjoyed playing the piano and was a vocal soloist in high school and for various church choirs.
Mrs. Horn was a life member of the Clayton Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8801 Ladies Auxiliary and the Order of the Eastern Star, Brandywine Chapter.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years from who she was divorced, Thomas E. "Ned" Horn Sr.
She is survived by a son and a daughter-in-law, Thomas E. Jr. and Carol Horn of Clayton; two daughters, Judyth L. Horn of Smyrna and Louisa E. "Lisa" McNatt of Clayton; a sister, Mary Ribsam of Odessa; five grandchildren, Eric McNatt, Emily Fortner, Andrew Fortner, Cathy Horn and Josh Beckwith; and a former daughter-in-law, Margaret Iorii of Dover.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Asbury United Methodist Church, 22-24 West Mount Vernon St., Smyrna.
Burial will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Asbury United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 330, Smyrna, DE 19977; or Compassionate Care Hospice, 5610 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808.
