James M. Hawpe, 83

DOVER - James M. Hawpe, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2009, in KGH Bay Health, Dover. He was 83. He was born May 19, 1926 in Greenville, Va., to the late Augustus and Mabel McAlpine Hawpe. He was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Dover, American Legion Fox Post Dover, Camden/Wyoming Moose Lodge, Kent County Retired Teachers, and Retired School Personnel of Delaware. Mr. Hawpe is a retired Delaware School Teacher starting in 1985 with 29 years of Teaching and coaching at Greenwood High School, Harrington High School and Lake Forest School District. Also teaching at Augusta County, Va. schools. He was a Graduate of Appalachian State University and Salisbury State University. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy in World War II. He is survived by his wife, Irene V. Hawpe of Dover; daughter and her husband, Karen Teresa and Raymond McCray of Staunton, Va.; daughter and her husband, Mable Anita and James Craig of Riceville, Tenn.; daughter and her husband, Lisa Ann and Greg Whitehead of Cleveland, Tenn.; stepson, Greg O'Bier of Garrett Park, Md.; stepdaughter, Ann Ferentinos of Chadds Ford, Pa.; stepdaughter, Deborah Williams of Bryson City, N.C.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and one stepgrandchild. Graveside Services and burial will be 3 p.m. Tuesday June 2, 2009 at Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Staunton, Va. Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday May 31, 2009 at the Trader Funeral Home in Dover. The family request that memorial contributions be given to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
