James Horace Hood, 77 MILTON - James Horace Hood was born Nov. 10, 1932, in Milton, to the late Horace and Florence Hood. He was 77 when the trumpet sounded and the archangel called one of its brave soldiers to rest; and James went peacefully to sleep in Jesus on Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at Christiana Hospital, Newark. James was affectionately called "Dad," "Pop," "Da," "PopPop," "Jim," "Jimmie," and "Uncle James" by many. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by family and friends and the many lives he touched. He was educated in the public schools in Milton. James was a Custodian with the Delaware Technical Community College in Georgetown, from which he retired after 25 years of dedicated service. He previously was employed with Burris Foods, Johnnie Walker, and at Rosedale Beach. One of his most favorable hobbies was going to the Racetrack betting on the horses. During the summer months every Wednesday evening you would find him socializing and enjoying the singing at Milton Park as well as his sociable visits at the Milton 7-11, Quick Stop and getting his sticky buns at Vintage Café & Bake Shop. His most favorable event of the day was spent socializing with "Buck Hopkins" in the parking lot of Milton Food Lion. James loved to keep up with the news of the day by reading the Delaware State News or News Journal. He thought the best exercise would be not to have the paper delivered to his home, but take his car and go and buy the paper. For many years, James continued with his favorite breakfast dish by preparing Pancakes and Eggs EVERYDAY. He enjoyed singing at Bethel A.M.E. Church with the different groups and Bethel Choir. His most enjoyable time was spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren always providing snacks and refreshments. Some years ago, James was awarded a pin from the Town of Milton for his heroic and bravery act in saving the life of a man whose car went over in the Milton Pond which today is called Wagamons Pond. James attended Bethel A.M.E. Church and sang with the Male Choir. James was kind, considerate, caring and loving. There was never a wrong side shown of him. He would do anything for you whether young or old, there was always enough "James" for everyone. James' wife, Catherine Marie Cottman Hood, preceded him in death as well as a son, James Edward Hood; a grandson, Nathan Darrell Carter; and a great-granddaughter, Sa'Nahya Dynasty Williams. James leaves to cherish the fond memories to his children, Diane Cannon (Douglas) of Milton, Jeffery Hood (Nadine) of Bear, Deborah Hood (Gilbert) of Milton, Lisa Carter of Milton, Kevin Hood (Denise) of Ellendale, and Tina Morris (Ronald) of Lincoln; 23 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; a special niece, Lucille Hood of Rehoboth, who was treated as a sister; niece, Pearl Cannon of Milton; sisters-in-law, Berthada Wright of Georgetown, Helen Williams of Philadelphia, Pa., Mildred Polk of Harbeson, and Thelma Cottman of Georgetown; and brother-in-law Virgil Cottman of Harbeson; a special friend, Kenny Gibbs of Harbeson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Bethel A.M.E. Church, Milton, where friends may call two hours prior to the service. Interment will be in Old Hickory Cemetery, Slaughter Neck. Letters of condolence may be sent, and guestbook may be signed at www.benniesmithfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are being handled by Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover.
