James E. Turner Jr.

DOVER - James E. "Jimmy" Turner Jr., of Dover, formerly of Smyrna, passed away on Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, at Westminster Village in Dover. He was 89. Mr. Turner was born Aug. 6, 1922, in Providence, R.I., the son of the late James E. Turner, Sr. and Madeline A. Kinnamon Turner. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy during WWII and the Delaware National Guard thereafter retiring as a Lt. Col. James retired in 1967 after 20 years of service as a Captain in the Delaware State Police. He also worked as a Field representative for the Delaware Safety Council for 17 years. Mr. Turner was a Lifelong Communicant of St. Peters Episcopal Church of Smyrna as well as a Life Member of Citizens Hose and Clayton Fire Companies. Jimmy was a member of the Harmony Lodge #13 AF&AM, a Life Member and a Past President of the Association Retired Delaware State Police, member of the Lions Club, VFW Post #8801, and the American Legion Post #14, all of Smyrna. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Florence Hopkins Turner in 1977; his second wife, Elaine Senger Turner in 1994; and a son, Stephen H. Turner in 1972. He is survived by a son, James E. "Jamie" Turner III and his wife Deborah of Smyrna; a daughter, Melanie T. "Muff" Meyers of Hartly; four grandchildren, Alana, Kimberly, George, and Katelyn; and two great-grandchildren, Keegan and Madelyn. He is also survived by his son-in-law, George; step-children, Marianne Colbert, William Pusey Jr., Dean Pusey, and Cindy Stonebraker. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, Dec. 5, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna. Services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011, at noon in St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 22 North Union St., Smyrna. Burial will be in St. Peter's Episcopal Cemetery in Smyrna at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Delaware State Police Museum, PO Box 430, Dover, DE 19904; or to Compassionate Care Hospice 702-B Kirkwood Hwy.
