DOVER - Jack Haig Murdich of Dover died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, in Dover. It was four days after his 89th birthday.
Mr. Murdich was a long-time resident of Scarsdale, N.Y., and was for many years the author of the Scarsdale Inquirer's weekly column of advice on buying produce, "Let's Get Fresh."
He moved to Scarsdale in 1956 and lived there until retiring to Delaware in 2003.
In Scarsdale, Mr. Murdich was a member of the Scarsdale Congregational Church, where he sang basso profundo in the Chancel Choir and performed in numerous theatrical productions (some of which he authored). A born comedian, he enjoyed making his audiences laugh.
As an expert on fresh fruits and vegetables, he lectured throughout Westchester County, N.Y., appearing on local radio and cable television shows. His book, "Buying Produce: A Greengrocer's Guide to Selecting and Storing Fresh Fruits and Vegetables," was published in 1986. At that time, he had been involved in the produce industry for nearly 50 years and was writing a bylined weekly column, "Our Man at Hunt's Point," for the Gannett Westchester newspapers. His column was also published in the Norwalk, Conn., Hour.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Florence (Burrell) Murdich; two daughters, Peggy Shearer of Scarsdale and Kathy Hoover of Dover; and two grandchildren, Jim Hoover of New York City and Katie Shearer of Scarsdale and Bryn Mawr, Pa. All of them had gathered with him earlier this month to celebrate his birthday.
Memorial services will be at a later date.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association, Kent County Division, 1151 Walker Road, Dover, DE 19904.
Local arrangements by Torbert Funeral Chapels, Dover.
