Jack Glenn Nichols

DOVER - Jack Glenn Nichols, of Dover, passed away Saturday July 9, 2011, at home. He was 78. He was born November 10, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late, Reeder Glenn Nichols and Jeanette Pounders Nichols. Jack served in the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1957 during the Korean War. While stationed in Japan, Jack won an International Model Airplane Contest. He completed his B.S Degree from the University of Alabama, his M.A. Degree from Florence State University and the Ed.D Degree from the University of Tennessee in 1971. Jack started his educational career teaching and coaching in Alabama. He spent most of his professional life in Delaware Public Education at the state level. Jack started out as a supervisor of School Planning Laboratory, Director of Finance then Assistant State Superintendent, where he retired in 1999, having been with the department for 27 years. He was a member of the Phi Delta Kappa, Adjunct Professor at University of Delaware and Wilmington College, American Association of School Administrators, and Delaware Association of School Administrators. He was a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Dover, where he served on the Board of Trusties and the Administrative Board. Jack enjoyed wood working, radio controlled model airplanes, and watching the University of Alabama sports and the Phillies, but most importantly, spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sally Turner Nichols of Dover; son, Walter Glenn Nichols and his wife Kerry of San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Caroline Nichols of Dover; brother, Martin Nichols of Sydney, Australia; and granddaughter, Emily Nichols from San Antonio Texas. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 14, 2011 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 209 S. State Street, Dover. Friends may call one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Jeremiah III Elevator Fund at Wesley United Methodist Church, 209 S. State Street, Dover, DE 19901. Letters of condolence may be sent, and guestbook signed at torbertfuneral.com.
