MILFORD - J. Marlene Hurd, 69, of Milford, a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed over on Monday, Sept. 6, 2011, at Bayhealth Medical Center, Milford. She was born in Denton, Md., the daughter of the late Thomas and Edith Edwards Hughes, who were the original founders of Hughes Delaware Maid Scrapple. She graduated from Felton High School in 1959 and was preceded in death by her brother Mervin Hughes. Mrs. Hurd was a secretary for the Lake Forest School District for 30 years and also worked for Kent County Recorder of Deeds for 10 years. She was the Founder and lead singer for Echo Canyon Band, which played throughout the State of Delaware. She also tended bar at the Owl's Nest Tavern in Felton. She was a very loving and giving person to whom no one was a stranger. "All of her kid's friends loved her as an additional mother figure." Her family was her life she was a very loving and caring person. She had a great sense of humor, playful nature. She was an avid Phillies Fan. She was survived by children and family, daughter Robin and Rick Walls, and daughter Kim Wingrove, and son Craig and Samantha Hurd; two siblings, Rosalie Kelly and Lenora Stephens; ten grandchildren, Chuck Carroll, Brock Tinley, Branden Meekins, Dave Donnelly, Samantha Donnelly, Brent Wingrove, Ashley, Abigail, Chloe and Madison Hurd; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, in the Chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home, Main Street, Felton, where friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. for a viewing. Interment will be private.
