Irva Lillian "Miss Pete" Newcomb Opher, 84

GLEN BURNIE, Md. - Irva Lillian "Miss Pete" Newcomb Opher of Glen Burnie passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2007, in Glen Burnie. She was 84.

Mrs. Opher was born July 1, 1922, in Bridgeville, Del., where she received her education in the public schools.

Early in life she was affiliated with True Vines Holiness Church under the pastorate of the late Elder Sabb. Elder Sabb, a Native American Indian, raised Irva as her own. She taught Irva the values of life and how to treat others.

Mrs. Opher married the late Carvis William Opher Dec. 24, 1953.

She was employed by Rob Roy and Airpax Electronics.

Mrs. Opher was a devoted member of Kingdom Church and Ministries pastured by Elder Carlton Brisco.

She was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church under Pastor John English for more than 40 years. She was also one of the original Shining Lights. She was affiliated with The National Church of God, the late Elder Jeremiah Cox and Pentecostal Temple Church, with pastor Elder Sam Brisco.

Mrs. Opher served dutifully wherever she needed, to Christ, in churches and her community. Mother Opher"s many gifts of love included cooking for the sick and shut in, visiting nursing homes and providing shelter for those who were in need. Mother Opher was blessed with many talents which included sewing, knitting, crocheting, making quilts, playing the organ late at night and making booties for her favorite friends. She operated her day care until the age of 79 and then she assisted with children at CCC and in the public school system. She was a loving and caring person; she was loved by family, friends and neighbors.

She is survived by a daughter and a son in-law, Rosalee Fletcher and Eugene Camper of Millersville; a son and a daughter-in-law, Tyrone and Gertie Nichols of Houston, Texas; three aunts, Victoria Jones of Williamsburg, Flossie Conway and Amanda Conway, both of Hurlock; an uncle, Joseph Jones of Williamsburg; six grandchildren, Jamilah Fletcher, Jahaziel Perez, RaeQwon Fletcher, Angela Land, Patrick Crayton and Tosha Nichols; six great-grandchildren, Jalanda Kellogg, Jabril Kellogg, Jawana Copes, Jabria Copes, Davon Wilson and Ayanna Wilson; special daughters in the Lord, Yolanda Payne Parker, Shawn Green and Ann Askins; three special friends, Ms. Addie Cromwell, Ms. Tina and Mrs. Georgia Dixon. Her passion was caring for children, Sandy Killette, Danielle Brown, Ashley Cephas, Amy and Irene Askins, Stephanie and Chanelle Lake, Ernest Payne III, Jamal Pinder, Theresa McNamara, Wade Fletcher, Toni Majors, Wayne and Emily Dupree and a host of others to numerous to mention, but, they all held a special place in her heart.

There will be a viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Henry Funeral Home, PA 510 Washington St. Cambridge.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Souls Harbor Church of God, 718 Peachblossom Ave., Cambridge.

Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday in Eastern Shore Veteran"s Cemetery, Hurlock.

Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.
