FELTON - Irma "Lucy" Verbruggen went to be with the Lord, Sept. 18th, 2016. She passed away at home with her family nearby. She was born on April 21st, 1921 in Germany and immigrated to Canada with her parents when she was three years old. About a year later they came to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and lived there until she finished fifth grade, and during the Depression the family moved to Loretta, Wisconsin where she remained until high school graduation. Irma went to art school for two years and got a job as a commercial artist for Schuster's department store in Milwaukee. She drew women's and children fashions for advertisements in the Milwaukee Journal. She met her future husband, George, when attending a dance at the Eagles Ballroom. They were engaged before W.W. II and married June 18, 1945, when he came home. He remained in the Air Force and they lived mostly on the Eastern Seaboard and retired near Morgantown, N.C. They also lived in Tennessee and Lakeland, Florida before coming to Delaware. She enjoyed oil painting and was an accomplished portrait painter and also did many paintings of landscapes and flowers. Lucy was predeceased by her husband, George; her son, Gerry; and her parents, Ludwig and Ida Karsten; her brother, Herbert Karsten; her sister, Irene Emond and her husband, Bud. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Moore and son-in-law Doug; her grandson, Rob Hicks and his wife Jamie; and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by extended family who live in Wisconsin, her sister-in-law, Barbara Karsten; and nieces, Jennifer Everts (Gary), Diane Hutte (Dave); nephews, Beau and Mark Emond and Jeff and Jay Karsten and their children and grandchildren. Lucy will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with her husband. Services and interment will be private. Letters of condolences may be sent and guest book signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
