Irene Nutter Atwell, 98

MILFORD - Irene Nutter Atwell, of Milford, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, in Milford Center. She was 98. Mrs. Atwell was born on June 14, 1910, in Pittsfield, Maine, daughter of the late Lewis C. and Myrtle (Chandler) Nutter. She was a graduate of Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Irene and her husband, Bert, moved to Milford in 1956 where she continued her responsibilities as a full time home maker and mother. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Milford New Century Club and the Avenue United Methodist Church in Milford. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bert J. Atwell in 1987. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Wilfred J. and Janice Atwell of Aberdeen, N.C.; a grandson, David Atwell of Aberdeen, N.C.; a granddaughter, Melody Nance and her husband Steve of Kernersville, N.C.; and a great-granddaughter, Laura Nance of Kernersville, N.C.. A graveside service was held Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009 at Henlopen Memorial Park, Route 1, Milton. Burial followed the service. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 N. Church St., Milford, DE 19963. Arrangements handled by Rogers Funeral Home, Milford.
