HARRINGTON - Irene Collins Outten, 87, of Harrington, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 3, 2011, at the Delaware Hospice Center surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Outten was born in Laurel, the daughter of the late Rubert Linwood and Nettie Mae (Ward) Collins. She worked at Dupont's Nylon Plant in Seaford from 1943 until 1948. Irene worked with her husband in his insurance business in Harrington for many years. After Bill retired, she enjoyed traveling to every state in the Union other than Hawaii; as well as traveling to England, Paris and Austria. Irene was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Harrington where she sang in the church choir for many years and was a member with her husband of the O.U.R. class. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Irene enjoyed cooking and baking, especially for her family, and will be remembered for the family dinners she would host every holiday. She enjoyed being around people and telling stories. She was a home room mother, a Brownie Leader and a Girl Scout Leader. She loved to do crafts, crochette, needlework, caning chairs and refinishing furniture. She was also an avid Bingo player. Irene was a member and Past President of the Harrington Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary; a member and Past President of the CKRT American Legion Post #7 Ladies Auxilary and was a member of the Home Demonstration Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Harriett Elizabeth (Betty) Marine, Helen Mae Bennett and Fannie Ward Hastings; and a brother, Ward Linwood Collins. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, William H. Outten; one daughter, Sylvia Jane Outten Smith and her husband Robert L. of Naples, Fla.; one son, William Robert Outten and his wife Lynn of Harrington; two brothers, George Jacob Collins and his wife Marlene of Laurel and Herbert Elwood Collins and his wife Faye, of Seaford; three grandchildren, Robert Stephen Smith, Kristin Jane Smith Pollazzi and her husband Scott, and Jeffrey Dean Outten and his wife Amanda; and six great- grandchildren, Eden and Bella Pollazzi, Natalie and Philip Smith and Cody and Nathan Outten. Funeral services were at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 6, 2011, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 65 Commerce Street, Harrington, where friends called from 2 to 3 p.m. Friends also called on Saturday evening from 4 to 6 p.m. at the McKnatt, Carpenter & Baker Funeral Home, 50 Commerce Street, Harrington. Burial was in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to either Harrington Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, 20 Clark Street, Harrington, DE 19952 or to Trinity United Methodist Church, 65 Commerce Street, Harrington, DE 19952 or to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
