Howard Gaines Jr., 79 DOVER - Howard Gaines Jr., of Dover, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010. He was 79. Mr. Gaines was born Oct. 18, 1930, in Clarksburg, W.Va., to the late Howard Gaines Sr., and Mary Elizabeth Freeman Davis. He received his undergraduate degree from Fairmont State College in Fairmont, W.Va., and his graduate degree from the University of Delaware in Newark. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1947 to 1955, retiring as a TSgt. In 1962 to 1968, he taught Senior English at Caesar Rodney High School. From 1968 to 1970, he worked for the Delaware Department of Public Instruction. Mr. Gaines then became Associate Principal for the Middle and High Schools in the Appoquinimink School District where he retired as Principal at the Silver Lake Elementary School in July 1991. Mr. Gaines enjoyed reading, doing geneology research, camping with his family, and hunting small game, deer, and water fowl. He was appointed Delaware Commissioner for Clan Donald USA, Inc. & later as the Mid-East Commissioner for Clan Donald, one of the largest and one of the oldest of the Scottish Highland Clans. He is survived by his son, Howard Gaines III of Harrington; daughters, Elaine Gaines of Dover, and Cynthia Gaines Yeomans and her husband John Yeomans of Smyrna; and grandsons, Jordan, Tyler, and Garrett Yeomans. Graveside services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 10, at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Clarksburg, W.Va. Letters of condolence may be sent, and guestbook signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
