Howard E. Payne

MILFORD - Howard E. Payne, 90, of Milford, died Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at Bay Health Center, Milford. He is the son of the late John Emory Payne and Helen Phillips Payne. He was a mechanic and truck driver for Borden's Ice Cream Company. Mr. Payne served during World World II, in the US Army, in the 752 Tank Battalion 5th Army Associations. Upon returning home from serving his country, he married his pen pal Agnes W. Wright. He was a bus driver for Greg's Bus Service in Yorklyn, Delaware and an avid gardener. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Agnes W. Wright Payne (2007); four siblings, Dorothy Donovan, Louise Bell, Phillip Payne and Thelma Orth. Also, a sister in law, Virginia Thomas. He is survived by his four sons, Ronald (Wanda), Robert (Gail), Gary (Terrie), Kevin (Donna) Payne; three sisters, Rachel Lord of Seaford, Edith Schofstahl of Melbourne, Fla., Martha Harris, of Seaford; three sister in laws, Marie Payne of Federalsburg, Dottie Wright of Milford, and Daisey Hill of Dover; ten grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Sunday November 16, 2014 in the Chapel of Berry Short Funeral Home, 119 NW Front Street, Milford, where friends may call from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. for a viewing. Interment will be Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington. In lieu of flowers donation can be made to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
