Henry Gilbert Clifton

DOVER - Henry Gilbert (Gil) Clifton died May 31, 2013 in the University of Pa. Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa., with his loving family at his side. Gil was born on June 30, 1933 to J. Ellis and Elizabeth (Viereck) Clifton in Rehoboth, Del. Gil graduated in 1951 from Dover High School and from Wesley College in 1954. He was quite pleased to finish his accounting and business studies and in receiving his BS degree from Delaware State College in 1987. In his early years he played saxophone in his dance band and served as a Coach for Camden-Wyoming Little League teams. A converted Catholic, he sponsored several candidates in the Holy Cross RCIA program and served as a Eucharistic Minister. He loved sports and was a faithful fan of the Phillies, the Philadelphia Eagles and enjoyed watching Girls Soft Ball. Using his John Deere Tractor to keep his lawn cut to perfection was always a challenge. Gil was employed as an accountant at several companies retiring in 1996. After his formal retirement he audited the books for several Delaware Teachers Associations. He was predeceased by his mother and father and two brothers, John E. (Jack) Clifton and Herbert D. Clifton. Gil is survived by loving wife Lois who he married on November 24, 1966; two children Beverly (Mike) Zastko and Ronald (Vivian) Clifton; five grand children Robert (Jennifer) Mehrtens, Jammie (David) Bennett, Matthew Oseland, Ronald and Christopher (Ami) Clifton; five great grandchildren, Devyn, Avery and Gavyn Mehrtens, Alexa and Taylor Bennett; two step sons, Larry (Dawn) Olmstead and Lee (Lisa) Olmstead; five step grandchildren, Lindsey, Jennifer, Jillian, David and Hayden Olmstead. Friends may call Friday, June 7, 2013, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Funeral Home of Michael J. Ambruso, 1175 S. State St. Dover. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday June 8, 2013 AT 9 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 631 S. State St. Dover. Interment will follow in Sharon Hill Cemetery, Dover, DE. In lieu of flowers family suggests donations in his memory to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 15120 Chicago, IL, 60692 or to Holy Cross Catholic Church, 631 S. State St., Dover, DE 19901. Condolences may be forwarded and Guest Book may be signed via www.ambruso.com
