Helen Susanna Watson Ashley, 99 CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Helen Susanna Watson Ashley, of Chestertown, died Sept. 9, 2008, in Chester River Manor. She was 99. Mrs. Ashley was born May 30, 1909, in Skinners Neck, Rock Hall, the last of eight children to survive the late Joseph E. and Mary Clara "Daisy" Kendall Watson. She was a lifetime resident of Skinners Neck until moving in with her daughter in the 1990s. She worked hard her entire life picking crabs, shucking oysters and packing strawberries in local canneries, eventually retiring from Vita Foods. During WWII she was a volunteer member of Army Air Forces Aircraft Warning Service Reserve. Mrs. Ashley was the last original member of Raum Chapel U.M. Church, having attended every Sunday until her illness prevented her in late August. She enjoyed word search puzzles, reading her Bible, attending church, Friday nights at Pasta Plus and being with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Allen Wright Ashley in 1972, and her son John Preston Ashley in 1952. Mrs. Ashley is survived by two children, David G. Ashley and his wife Irene and Joan Hatcherson and her husband Robert both of Chestertown; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be noon Monday in Raum Chapel, Skinners Neck, Rock Hall, where friends may call one hour prior. Burial in Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Memorials may be offered to Raum Chapel U.M.
