Helen Jervis Hastings, 93

CRUPMTON, MD - Helen Jervis Hastings, died peacefully in her home on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008. She was 93. Mrs. Hastings was born May 16, 1915 on the family farm near Still Pond, Md. She was the eldest daughter of the late Albert Jervis and Julia Nicholson Jervis. At the age of nine, the family moved off the farm, to a home in Still Pond. Mrs. Hastings attended Still Pond Elementary School and Chestertown High School. She graduated from Washington College in 1936. After college she helped her father with the family business for several years. From 1940 to 1947 Mrs. Hastings had charge of the Red Star Bus Terminal in Wilmington. It was during this time that she met her husband, the late William J. Hastings, and they married on July 26, 1947. Mr. & Mrs. Hastings made their home in Wilmington, until moving to Crumpton in 1963. Mrs. Hastings enjoyed working in her garden and sharing the fruits of her labor with friends. She was active in her farming business and loved her farms. She was a member of the Kent County Farm Bureau. Mrs. Hastings was preceded in death by her husband in 1964; an infant daughter, who died in January of 1951; and a infant son, who died in July of 1952. Also preceding her was a nephew, Kenneth A. Weer, who died in 1988. Mrs. Hastings is survived by her sister, Eloise Jervis Weer, of Kingsville, Md.; a nephew, Gary Weer; two great-nephews and a great niece, also of Kingsville; and many dear friends who were like family to her. In addition to those mentioned, she is also survived by two special people, whom she regarded as her adopted son and daughter, Buddy and Debbie Fuchs. Services will be 12 noon Tuesday, December 30, 2008 in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St., Galena, where friends may call one hour prior to service. Burial in Chester Cemetery, Chestertown, Md. If you wish, in lieu of flowers, donations may be offered to Chester River Home Care and Hospice, 6602 Church Hill Road, Suite 300, Chestertown, MD 21620.
