HARRINGTON - Hazel M. Smith, a longtime resident of Harrington, died of natural causes Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, in Heritage, Milford, where she had been a resident since September 2006. She was 89.

Mrs. Smith was born in Ridgely, Md., daughter of the late Calvin and Lolita Lynch.

She was a graduate of Washington College, Chestertown, Md.

She began a teaching career at Harrington High School in 1959, and transferred to Lake Forest High School when the district consolidated. She taught English/literature, directed many plays at Harrington High School and was the coordinator of the Chapter of American Field Service. She also served as a class advisor. She retired in 1981 after 22 years of service.

Mrs. Smith was an active community volunteer with such agencies as the Harrington Senior Center, Friends of the Harrington Public Library and Bayhealth Medical Center in the Gift Shop. She volunteered as a tutor for More Adult Readers in Kent and the Creative Mentoring Program at Lake Forest South. She was a longstanding member of St. Bernadette's Catholic Church, Harrington. She was also a member of the Delaware State Education Association and received their Community Partner Award in 2004.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Smith; and a brother, James H. Lynch.

She is survived by a sister, Jeanette Wood of Wernersville, Pa.; a son, William Bruce Smith and his wife Linda of Delmar, Md.; three daughters, Patricia A. Smith of Harrington, Linda J. DiCampli of Wilmington and Diane S. Fleming and her husband Jim of Milford; five grandchildren, Shannon Donoway, Dennis DiCampli, Daniel DiCampli, Andrea Fleming and Nathan Fleming; and four great-grandchildren, Corinne Donoway, Ian Donoway, Sarah DiCampli and Adriana DiCampli.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Bernadette's Catholic Church, Harrington.

Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.

Instead of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the Delaware Hospice, 20167 Office Circle, Georgetown, DE 19947; or the Friends of the Harrington Public Library, Center Street, Harrington, DE 19952.
