WORTON, Md. - Gertrude Anna Jones, of Worton, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007, in Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Chestertown. She was 73.
A Time to Be Born: Genesis 2:7, the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
Gertrude, the daughter of the late Alonzo and Lillian Brooks was born on April 17, 1934, in Worton.
A Time to Live: Exodus 18:20, Teach them the decrees and laws, and show them the way to live and the duties they are to perform.
Gertrude was educated in Chestertown.
She was an active member of Union United Methodist Church in Coleman.
In her youth, Gertrude was a member of the Colemann Gospel Singers.
She was a proud mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend.
A Time to Serve: Job 36:11, If they obey and serve him, they will spend the rest of their days in prosperity an their youth in contentment.
Gertrude was employed by Campbell Soup in Chestertown, where she was a faithful worker.
While on her job, her giving and loving spirit allowed her to make lasting friendships.
She retired from Campbell Soup after 34 years of service.
In her retirement, Gertrude spent time with her family and serving God and helping others.
A Time to Mourn: Jeremiah 31:13, I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.
She was preceded in death by her three brothers, two children, one granddaughter, and one great-grandmother.
Gertrude leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Helen Sweets and her husband Freddie of Chestertown, and Iris Jones of New Castle, Del.; one son, Pastor Guy E. Jones Sr. and his wife Sherrilyn of Coleman; 10 grandchildren, Michelle Phillips of Coleman, Tanyelle Jones and Shanice Barrett, both of Wilmington, Del., Ronnell Page of New Castle, Ryan Wilson and Clifton Wilson, both of Chestertown, Guishia Jones and Shelita Jones, both of Dover, Del., Guy Jones and Shania Jones, both of Coleman; five great-grandchildren, T'Keyah Jones of Chestertown, Zhane Benson of Centreville, Ronnie Page, Yasmin Jiggetts and Cameron Barrett, all of Wilmington; one brother-in-law, William Jones and his wife Shirley of Worton; four sister-in-laws, Gertrude Tinch of Galena, Faye Little and her husband James, Iris D. Oakley and her husband Marvin and Erma A. Jones, all of Worton; two adopted sisters, Rosemary Brown and Dorothy Wilson, both of Worton; a daughter-in-law, Darlene Wilson of Chestertown; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today in the Union U.M. Church, Worton, where friends may call one hour prior.
