DOVER - George William Contant passed away Friday, Aug. 12, 2016. Mr. Contant was born Jan. 27, 1956 in Clifton Springs, N.Y., to the late George W. Contant and Helen Geer Contant and grew up in Palmyra, N.Y. and Sodus Point, N.Y. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Katrinka Trowbridge Contant; sons, Aaron Contant and his wife, Alex, Jonathan Contant and his wife, Heather; and expected grandson, Elijah Armour Contant, all of Dover; daughter, Krystin and her husband, Capt. Matthew Piston, of Maryland; sister, Catherine Contant and her partner, Adrienne McLark, of Palmyra, N.Y. He holds degrees from the State University of New York and Wilmington College and served six years in the United States Air Force. He was a co-owner for 25 years at Design One Interiors with his wife. Mr. Contant also consulted for the Delaware Prison Arts program and provided historical research and interpretation development for Cambridge, Md., and Dover and Middletown. He began volunteering with Delaware State Parks in the mid-90's and began employment in 2001 as the Site Manager at Forts Delaware and DuPont State Parks. He then moved on to Park's Cultural Resources Unit as a researcher, where he recently completed a history of Delaware's state parks and has been working on establishing a museum at Fort Miles. He is also the author of two books about the Civil War and multiple articles on military history. Mr. Contant enjoyed researching and speaking about military history throughout the east coast and traveling to battlefields and historic sites. He loved spending time with his family and dogs and talking about his children. He was a member of the Calvary Church, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Sons of the American Revolution, and lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. Friends may visit at 1 p.m., with a service to follow at 2 p.m., on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016 at Calvary Assembly of God Church, 1141 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover. Interment will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Palmyra Village Cemetery, Palmyra, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Fort Miles Historical Association in George's honor, Fort Miles Historical Association, 120 E. Wild Rabbit Run, Lewes, DE 19958. Letters of condolences may be sent and guest book signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
