FELTON - George W. Slater Sr., of Felton, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, in Westminster Village Health Center, Dover. He was 73.
He was born in Harrington, to the late George Slater and Ida Slater Shuster.
Mr. Slater retired as a truck mechanic for the city of Dover after 17 years.
In his spare time, he was a professional broom maker.
Mr. Slater fashioned his own broom making machine, and spent countless hours at area shows making and selling his brooms.
He even grew his own broom corn and harvested and dried the material he used to make brooms.
Mr. Slater was a former member of the Harrington Church of the Nazarene, and a current member of the Sandtown Church of the Nazarene. He also belonged to the Harrington Moose Lodge 534.
He was preceded in death by sisters Mary Welch, Bessie Carter, and Amy Watkins.
He is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Laura Slater of Felton; sons, Joseph, Allan, and William Sykes; a brother, Frank Slater; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday in Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Highway, Harrington, where friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Sunday.
Interment will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington
Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington.
