BLACKBIRD - George W. Dalphon, age 81, of Blackbird, passed away on Aug. 29, 2010, from complications received from a late 2009 brain injury. Mr. Dalphon was born in Renovo, Pa., but moved with his family to Delaware as a young child. As a graduate of PS DuPont High School, George joined the army, served in the post war occupation of Japan, and later served as a member of Wilmington City Police Force. Later in his early twenties, he left the police force to devote his energies to the scrap recycling industry, where he enjoyed a successful and hardworking career until his retirement in 1991. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, he was passionately devoted, as both an owner and trainer to the Standardbred horse racing business for the last 40 years. His devotion and passion was equally shared by his loving wife of 61 years, Joan Hall Dalphon. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Francis Dalphon; his in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hayman Hall; and his son-in-law, Donald Millar Laws. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, George W. Dalphon Jr. and his wife Mary Trimble Dalphon of Chesapeake City and Elanor Dalphon Laws of Townsend; four grandchildren, Keri Allison Laws, Nichola Dalphon Morrison and her husband M. Barry Morrison, Brandon Alan Laws, and Gwen Hall Dalphon. He is also survived by his brother, Charles Francis Dalphon Jr. and his wife Joan Thompson Dalphon. He will be forever remembered as a kind, gentle, and caring man who truly lived and experienced the American Dream, and for his determination and ability to overcome whatever obstacles he would encounter through hard work, as well as his mischievo us smile that evidenced his everpresent sense of humor. Services will be private. Donation to honor George's memory may be made to Vitas Innovative Hospice Care, 100 Commerce Drive, Christiana Corporate Center #302, Newark, DE 19713, or Horse Lovers United, PO Box 2744, Salisbury, MD 21802-2744.
