FORT WORTH, Texas - George T. Lane of Fort Worth, formerly of Hartly and Kenton, Del., went to join his wife and his heavenly father Sunday, May 13, 2007, in Fort Worth. He was 89.

Born April 24, 1918, in Newark, Del., he was the youngest of 11 children to the late Samuel and Alice L. (Nickerson) Lane.

Mr. Lane was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1944 to 1946 as a special vehicle operator with the 932 Engineer Depot Co. in the Philippine Islands. In 1945, he received several artillery metals for his expertise in handling MKM-M1 rifles while serving in the Army Ground Forces Field Artillery.

In 1963 he retired from Daimler Chrysler Corp. to farm full time in Kenton and later in Hartly. He spent 46 years dedicated to farming and growing produce for his customers at the Wilmington (Del.) Farmers Market. In 2000, Mr. Lane retired from farming, and in 2001 moved with his daughter Catherine and her husband, Michael, to Washington state and later Fort Worth.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Lane was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine T. (McGrellis) Lane, in 1991.

He is survived by his daughters, Patricia Cook of Crescent City, Fla., Joan Gardner and her husband Larry of Smyrna, Del., and Catherine Georgette Metzger and her husband Michael of Fort Worth; seven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

George will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

Funeral services will be noon Thursday in Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown, Del., where family and friends may call two hours prior to service. Interment will follow with military honors at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, Del.
